Little Book ‘The Infinite: Edition 1’ Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

Little Book ‘The Infinite: Edition 1’ Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

Little Book: The Infinite’s first blend consists of four bourbons, representing each master distiller’s “contribution” to the bourbon. While I couldn’t get the precise breakdown of the blend, Freddie did say it was close enough to basically consider each component an equal amount in the blend. In other words, each component makes up roughly 25% of the blend.

-Booker Noe’s Component: 20 year straight Kentucky bourbon (Jim Beam “low rye” mashbill)

-Fred Noe’s Component: 14 year straight Kentucky bourbon (Jim Beam “low rye mashbill)

-Freddie Noe’s Component: 7 year straight Kentucky bourbon (Basil Hayden Toasted mashbill)

-Shared Family Component: 8 year straight Kentucky bourbon (Jim Beam “low rye” mashbill)

Let’s talk a little about that blend. This is speculation, but I’m almost certain Booker’s and Fred’s components -had they not entered this blend- would’ve gone on to be Booker’s. With Booker it’s in his name, and Fred has done a pretty good job stewarding the brand in his father’s absence. I could also be convinced Fred’s component would’ve become Knob Creek. I will say I’m certain that the 20 year component had nothing to do with this year’s earlier release of the Bardstown Collection, which was a blend of three 20 year old barrels of bourbon. The 8 year “Shared Family Component” actually was specified as Booker’s. That leaves Freddie’s component. If you’ve seen my other in-depth reviews of Jim Beam products, you’ll recall I’ve discussed their mashbills. To summarize, when it comes to bourbon, Jim Beam typically uses two mashbills: the Jim Beam “low rye” mashbill, and the Old Granddad “high rye” mashbill. Yet we see a Basil Hayden Toasted mashbill in this blend. What you may not know is Basil Hayden Toasted has brown rice in the mashbill. The very same mashbill was used in Freddie’s component. Like me, you may have exhaled just a little out of your nose when you learned this information. Does brown rice belong in bourbon? In whiskey? I’ll say as far as Basil Hayden goes, Toasted is my second favorite offering. And if Freddie Noe is known for any one thing, it’s experimenting. No point in speculating the brown rice further, the only way to see how this blend holds up is to taste the bourbon!
